ChatGPT has a free plan and several paid ones. As of late October 2026, OpenAI lists Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month, and Pro at $100, $200 or $500 a month in the US. Teams can buy Business seats, and large organizations get custom Enterprise pricing.
The free tier is enough for many people. Paid plans mainly add higher usage limits, stronger reasoning models, more uploads and extra tools. Below is what each tier includes, based on OpenAI’s own pages, and how to decide which one fits.
ChatGPT price plans at a glance
These are US list prices from the OpenAI pricing page and help center as of October 2026. Prices in other countries can differ, and sales tax may apply.
| Plan | US price (October 2026) | Ads | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | May appear | Occasional questions, writing help, light use |
| Go | $8 per month | May appear | Regular users who hit free limits |
| Plus | $20 per month | None | Daily users who want advanced reasoning and more tools |
| Pro | $100, $200 or $500 per month | None | Heavy professional use and coding |
| Business | $25 per seat monthly, or $20 per seat per month billed yearly | None | Small and mid-size teams, two seats minimum |
| Enterprise and Edu | Custom quote | None | Large companies and schools |
Keep in mind that ChatGPT subscriptions and the OpenAI API are billed separately. A Plus plan does not include API credits for developers.
Is ChatGPT free to use?
Yes. Anyone can sign up and use ChatGPT at no cost. The free plan includes everyday text chats, web search, file and image uploads, and some image creation. However, tools such as uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis each have their own limits. When you hit one, you wait for it to reset or upgrade.
There is a trade-off in 2026. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026, and ads may appear on the Free and Go plans. According to the help article on ads in ChatGPT, free users can switch to an ad-free mode instead. That mode comes with lower message limits and fewer features, such as no image generation. Accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 do not see ads.
ChatGPT Go vs Plus
Go is the budget tier. It launched first in India in August 2025, then became available in every country where ChatGPT is supported. In the US it costs $8 a month. The help article on ChatGPT Go says it adds higher limits on messages, image creation and file uploads, plus longer memory than the free plan.
Plus costs $20 a month and sits one step higher. Its Plus help page describes priority access at busy times, more messages, broader model choice, advanced reasoning, voice conversations and expanded deep research. Plus also includes projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and more coding tool usage. Unlike Go, Plus has no ads.
So the choice comes down to how you use it. Go works for someone who writes emails, summarizes articles and asks quick questions every day. Plus makes more sense if you analyze long documents, work through multi-step problems or use the coding tools. The $12 monthly gap adds up to $144 a year, which is worth weighing against the time you save.
What the Pro tiers add
Pro used to be a single $200 plan. During 2026 OpenAI split it into three monthly tiers. A $100 option arrived in April, and a $500 tier launched on September 29. According to the Pro tiers help page, the $200 tier includes more usage than the $100 one, and the $500 tier has the highest allowance. Only the top tier includes the fastest processing modes at launch.
Pro is billed monthly, with no annual option. In practice, it targets developers, researchers and people who run long, heavy tasks all day. Most individual users never reach the Plus limits, so Pro is rarely the first upgrade to try.
Business and Enterprise plans
Business is the team plan. A standard seat costs $25 a month on monthly billing, or $20 a month when billed yearly. New workspaces need at least two seats. Since August 2026, OpenAI also sells Premium seats at $125 a month, or $100 a month billed yearly, with five times the usage of a standard seat.
The Business billing rules matter before you commit. You pay for every seat in the workspace, whether or not someone uses it. On a yearly plan, seat reductions take effect only at the next renewal. Business, Enterprise and Edu plans have no ads, and OpenAI states it does not train its models on business data by default.
Chat tools for companies are not new. Years ago firms were already building analytics for business chatbots, as in this archive story on a partnership to measure enterprise chatbots. What changed is the scale and the pricing model.
How billing, upgrades and limits work
Most people start on the free plan and upgrade from the account menu. When you upgrade, the new limits apply right away, and the monthly charge starts that day. If you later downgrade, the change usually takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
Where you pay matters too. If you subscribed through the Apple or Google app store, you manage and cancel the plan there, not on the ChatGPT website. That is a common source of confusion when people try to cancel.
Usage limits also deserve a closer look. OpenAI does not publish one fixed message cap for chat on Plus. Instead, limits can shift with demand and with the model you pick. So if you depend on a certain amount of use, check the model picker and the help center before you rely on a plan for work.
Heavy users have one more option. Plus and Pro subscribers who reach their limit on some tools can buy extra credits instead of moving up a tier. That can be cheaper than an upgrade if you only hit the cap a few times a month.
Finally, think about who else in your household or office uses it. Each paid plan covers one person. Sharing a login breaks the terms of use, and it also mixes your chat history and memory with someone else’s. For a small team, two Business seats often make more sense than shared accounts.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it?
It depends on how often you hit limits on the free plan. A simple test helps. Use the free tier for two weeks and note each time you get cut off or need a feature you lack.
- Rarely blocked: stay on Free.
- Blocked a few times a week: Go at $8 may be enough, if ads do not bother you.
- Blocked daily, or you need advanced reasoning, research or coding tools: Plus is the logical step.
- Running long jobs all day for work: look at Pro or a Business seat.
Also remember that AI answers can be wrong, whatever you pay. Paid tiers give more capacity, not a guarantee of accuracy. Our overview of the pros and cons of AI covers those limits, and our explainer on artificial intelligence vs machine learning explains how tools like ChatGPT are built.
