Marquis Who’s Who has given neurosurgeon Stephen D. Burstein, MD, FACS, its Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. The announcement came from Rockville Centre, New York, on March 1, 2018. The publisher of biographical profiles named the honor after Albert Nelson Marquis, who founded the Who’s Who series.
Dr. Burstein is a senior partner and attending physician at Neurological Surgery, P.C., in Nassau County, New York. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Before that, he led neurosurgery at two local hospitals, South Nassau Communities Hospital and Franklin General Hospital.
His practice covers both surgical and nonsurgical care of brain and spine conditions. He also gives second opinions and handles independent insurance examinations, which brings a different kind of case to his desk.
Teaching has been part of the work too. Dr. Burstein has led postgraduate courses and published in peer-reviewed journals, and he is an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has held leadership roles with the New York State Neurosurgical Society and the Long Island Hearing and Speech Society. Starting in 1978, he also served for many years on the board of South Nassau Community Hospital.
His training began at the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1954. He then received his medical degree from SUNY in 1958. After a surgical internship at Johns Hopkins, he completed a fellowship in neurological surgery at the Mayo Clinic Foundation. In 1965 he added a master’s degree in neurosurgery from the University of Minnesota.
Military service came along the way. Dr. Burstein was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, and he worked as a battalion surgeon with the third and fifth Marine divisions.
Marquis Who’s Who says it chooses the people it profiles based on several factors. Those include current position, accomplishments, visibility and standing in their field, so the lifetime award goes to listees with long careers behind them.
