LUXROBO, a robotics education startup from Korea, plans to bring a homeschooling coding product to North America. The launch is set for November 2020, the company announced on October 30, 2020. The product, called the Designer Kit Set, will sell on eBay and Shopify for about US$220.
The set has three parts: a Designer Kit, a Making Pack and a Coding Sketch. LUXROBO’s research and development center created it in response to the problems schools faced in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the Designer Kit, users apply basic engineering and coding to real-life scenarios while expressing their own creativity. It includes up to 10 activities. Two of them are unplugged, while the other eight involve coding. Together they push children to build their own coding projects in a creative setting. Kids can code from scratch on Android or iOS devices through MODI, the company’s modular robotics platform.
MODI is LUXROBO’s coding education kit for building and connecting DIY robots. It has input, output and setup modules. As a result, learners can pick up key ideas from computer science and coding in a playful way. Through hands-on projects, users of all ages solve problems step by step and build critical and computational thinking skills. According to the company, MODI classes work especially well when combined with a STEAM curriculum, 3D printing and LEGO.
LUXROBO Inc. was founded in 2014. In South Korea, it provides online and offline coding education services for corporate clients. The MODI platform consists of 21 modules, each with a specific function. It also comes with software coding tools for learners of every age and background. Each module’s role is meant to be easy to recognize. Unlike most modular devices, MODI has no exposed circuit board, which the company says makes it safer and more familiar for children.
