Westbound Century Boulevard at LAX closes every night through Friday, Nov. 13, between Jetway Boulevard and Vicksburg Avenue. Drivers heading to the Departures level need to use a detour, and the airport’s SkyLink people mover is not expected to open before Jan. 6, 2027.
The closures are part of construction around the airport’s new ground transportation system. They affect anyone who drives, gets dropped off or takes a rideshare to the terminals late at night or in the early morning.
Closure hours and detours
According to the LAX Transformation advisory, the closures run Monday through Thursday nights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. On Friday nights they run from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m. They began Sept. 21.
During those hours, southbound Jetway Boulevard is closed between 98th Street and Century Boulevard. The westbound Century Departures Ramp cannot be reached, and detour signs send drivers to the Sky Way Bridge for the Departures Level. Some access stays open at all times:
- The westbound Century Arrivals Ramp.
- Westbound Century Boulevard to northbound Jetway Boulevard.
Pedestrians are rerouted along 98th Street. Airport staff note that the work schedule and hours are subject to change, so check the advisory before a late-night or early-morning trip.
SkyLink: why it matters for traffic
The SkyLink people mover is a 2.5-mile electric train meant to carry travelers between a Metro station, rental car facilities and the terminals. That should take some traffic off the roads around the airport. It was first scheduled for 2023, and the date has moved several times since.
In late September, NBC Los Angeles reported a new target of Jan. 6, 2027, after an earlier goal of October 2026. The system must run for 30 consecutive days without problems before it can carry passengers, and it still needs safety checks. LAX said in a statement, “We will not compromise on these stringent safety protocols.” Until then, travelers will keep using the existing curb roads, shuttles and rideshare areas.
Tips for travelers
- Leave extra time if you drive to Departures between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- Use the Arrivals Ramp or the Sky Way Bridge route when signs direct you there.
- Check your airline for flight times before leaving, because detours can add minutes.
- Ask rideshare drivers to follow posted detours instead of the usual route.
As of Oct. 20, 2026, the closures have about three weeks left if the schedule holds. For other road work around the city, see our report on the Vincent Thomas Bridge closure, or browse the Los Angeles and California guide.
