Cahuenga Pass Paving: 101 Overnight Closures Nov. 2-6

Caltrans closes lanes, connectors and ramps on U.S. 101 through the Cahuenga Pass every night from Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 6, for Cahuenga Pass paving. Crews work from about 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and Friday into Saturday the closures run later, to 9 a.m. for lanes.

The work is part of a $24.3 million rehabilitation project that Caltrans expects to finish in summer 2029. So this week is one stretch of a job that will touch the corridor for almost three years.

What closes during Cahuenga Pass paving

On northbound 101 between Highland Avenue and State Route 170, Caltrans closes up to three lanes from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday. Between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., it closes up to four lanes. On Friday night into Saturday, the three-lane closure lasts until 9 a.m.

Four freeway connectors close fully on weeknights:

  • Northbound Hollywood Freeway to northbound Ventura Freeway, from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Southbound Hollywood Freeway to eastbound SR-134, from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Southbound Ventura Freeway to southbound Hollywood Freeway, from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Southbound SR-170 to southbound Hollywood Freeway, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Many on-ramps and off-ramps near Universal City, Studio City and North Hollywood also close during work hours. On Friday and Saturday, most ramp closures run into the late morning. Because the list is long, check the Caltrans District 7 notice for your exact ramp.

Detours to expect

Caltrans posts message signs along each detour. Drivers heading from the northbound Hollywood Freeway to the northbound Ventura Freeway exit at Vineland Avenue. They then go north on Vineland, west on Moorpark Street and north on Tujunga Avenue to the northbound 101 on-ramp.

For eastbound SR-134, drivers take the same Vineland Avenue off-ramp, go north, then turn east on Riverside Drive to the SR-134 on-ramp. Drivers from southbound SR-170 continue to eastbound SR-134, exit at Cahuenga Boulevard and go south to Lankershim Boulevard. They then rejoin southbound 101.

What the project does

The contract, held by Chumo Construction Inc., resurfaces lanes, ramps and shoulders. Crews also replace concrete slabs, guardrails, curbs, a crash cushion and striping. In addition, they upgrade curb ramps at 23 locations to meet ADA standards. Caltrans says the project extends pavement life and improves ride quality and pedestrian safety.

Nearby residents and businesses may hear noise and feel vibration, and dust is possible. However, the schedule can change with weather or operations, including dates, hours and the number of closures. For live conditions, use Caltrans QuickMap before you leave. Caltrans also asks drivers to “Slow for the Cone Zone” and to stay work zone alert.

What comes next

Because the project runs to 2029, expect more overnight notices for this stretch. Caltrans has posted a new notice for the 101 in the Cahuenga Pass most weeks since early October. Another Hollywood job also starts Nov. 2, so see our report on the Franklin Avenue lane closure in Hollywood. For more city coverage, visit our Los Angeles and California hub.
