Manhattan College has received a $25 million gift from alumnus Thomas D. O’Malley, class of 1963. It is the largest donation in the college’s history. In recognition, the school of business will now carry his name: the O’Malley School of Business.
This is not his first gift to the Riverdale campus. Back in 2012, O’Malley gave the college $10 million. The new donation is two and a half times larger.
According to the college, the money will go to three areas. Part of it funds student scholarships and grants. Another share supports teaching and research. The rest pays for new learning opportunities for students.
O’Malley’s ties to the college go beyond money, though. He and his wife, Mary Alice, were later affiliated with the Brothers of the Christian Schools. That Lasallian order founded the college and still sponsors it.
The renaming takes effect with the gift, while a formal dedication of the O’Malley School of Business is set to follow once the new academic year begins.
