Winged Canvas, an art school and creative hub in Markham, Ontario, has opened a full-service art gallery. The new space gives artists and art lovers in Markham and York Region more to see and do. It will host events such as group shows and salon shows for local residents.
The school was founded by award-winning artist Fei Lu. Since then it has grown into an art hub for York Region and the Greater Toronto Area, open to artists of all ages. It offers studio space as well as classes, camps and other art services, and visitors often say the place feels built for inspiration.
Before she started Winged Canvas, Lu earned recognition as a graphic designer, illustrator and advertising art director. She also comes from a family of internationally known artists, including her grandfather, EnYi Lu, and her aunt, Jai Lu.
The goal is a space where local artists can meet, create and share their work with the community. Lu, who is also the gallery’s curator, pointed out that people in the suburbs currently have to travel to Toronto to buy or sell art. Winged Canvas wants to change that, she said, because the school believes the effort will spread artistic literacy and bring more cultural life to York Region.
The gallery already shows a wide range of original work by exhibiting artists. Its move to full service has stirred real excitement among local creatives. The school has also announced a Call for Artists, which runs from November 24 to December 17.
Programs are aimed at every age group, so both children and adults can take part in classes, camps and events. The only thing asked of visitors is a shared passion for the arts.
So far, the group and salon shows have drawn positive reactions from visitors and students. More events and exhibitions with provocative and inspiring work are planned for the near future.
