Caltrans will close lanes, freeway connectors and ramps on State Route 91 overnight from Monday, Oct. 26, through Friday morning, Oct. 30, between Gardena and the Orange County line. The Friday night closures run into Saturday morning, Oct. 31, so the SR-91 overnight closures from Cerritos to Gardena affect late-night and early-morning drivers all week.
SR-91 overnight closures: lanes and hours
Caltrans District 7 announced the schedule on Oct. 22 for its sign rehabilitation project. Crews are doing curb, gutter and sidewalk work this week. Up to three lanes will close at a time, and hours vary by segment.
- Eastbound, Vermont Avenue to I-710: up to 3 lanes, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Eastbound, I-710 to I-605: up to 3 lanes, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Westbound, Atlantic Avenue to Vermont Avenue: up to 3 lanes, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Westbound, Orange County line to I-605: up to 2 lanes, from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m.
On Friday night, Oct. 30, several closures last longer, some until 10 a.m. Saturday. Caltrans says SR-91 is already down to two lanes overnight between Vermont Avenue and the Orange County line, and full closures at ramps and connectors may roll as crews move.
Connectors and ramps affected
Connector closures include eastbound SR-91 to I-110, I-710 and I-605, and westbound SR-91 to I-110. Entry from northbound and southbound I-110 and southbound I-605 into westbound SR-91 will also close at night. Several on-ramps and off-ramps will close too, including Long Beach Boulevard, Main Street, Alameda Street/Santa Fe Avenue, Paramount Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue and Carmenita Avenue. Exact hours for each are in the full Caltrans notice. Detours will be marked, with message signs along the routes.
About the project and what to do
The project will upgrade roadside and overhead signs and lighting, restore planting, replace guardrail and add worker safety improvements along 14.7 miles of SR-91. Caltrans lists the cost at $34 million, with Security Paving Company as contractor and completion expected in summer 2029. That means more closure notices are likely for months.
Caltrans says the schedule can change with weather or operations. Drivers should allow extra time, and the agency suggests checking Caltrans QuickMap before leaving. Nearby residents may hear noise and feel vibration. Last week’s work was covered in our report on the 101 and 91 closures, and more road news is in our Los Angeles and California guide.
