CSU Faculty Strike Vote: CFA Members Decide by Nov. 19

The California Faculty Association (CFA) is asking its members to authorize a strike against the California State University system, and the CSU faculty strike vote closes on Nov. 19. The union represents about 29,000 faculty members, including instructors at campuses in and around Los Angeles. A yes vote would not start a strike by itself.

What the CSU faculty strike vote does

The vote gives the union’s leaders permission to call a strike later if talks stall. Contract talks can continue while the vote runs and after it ends. According to LAist’s Nov. 2 report, negotiations with CSU have reached an impasse. The union’s website now shows a banner urging members to vote for strike authorization, and it posted a bargaining update on Oct. 29.

The union last struck in January 2024. That walkout lasted one day and disrupted classes for about 500,000 students across the system, LAist reports. So this vote does not mean classes will stop soon, but it does raise the odds that students will see another disruption later.

Issues on the table

The union is asking for raises, though LAist did not report specific figures. It also wants stronger academic freedom protections as federal pressure grows over diversity programs and research funding. In addition, members want a say in how artificial intelligence is used in their work. They point to a CSU contract with OpenAI that costs $13 million a year and says faculty were not consulted.

Working conditions are part of the dispute too. Some faculty say offices passed 90 degrees during recent heat waves because the buildings lacked air conditioning. The union also wants more research time for tenure-track faculty and paid service time for lecturers. Meanwhile, the bargaining team has grown to include members from every campus.

What CSU says

CSU spokesperson Amy Bentley-Smith told LAist that the system has reached agreements with four other unions. She said CSU believes continued negotiations, not a strike, offer the best path to a fair agreement. Union leaders describe their current proposal as the boldest the team has made.

What students and families can do

Nothing changes for classes today. However, students at Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Long Beach can watch campus email for updates after Nov. 19. The union’s results, the next bargaining sessions and any strike notice will decide what happens next. Check your campus website for official schedule changes.
