Dermatologic Surgery Releases Special Issue on Aesthetic Procedures for the Male Patient

Dermatologic Surgery, the official journal of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), has published a special issue devoted to men. Titled Aesthetic Procedures for the Male Patient, it is the journal’s November 2017 issue.

The collection is also sizable. It holds 12 articles and eight commentaries, and each of them targets concerns specific to male patients. Topics range from hair transplantation and chemical peels to body contouring and neck rejuvenation. Other pieces look at facial aging, while one area covers cosmetic concerns in men of color.

The issue was co-guest edited by two dermatologists. One is Seth Matarasso, M.D., a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco. The other, meanwhile, is Lisa Donofrio, M.D.

Donofrio pointed to figures from a 2016 ASDS survey to show why the topic deserves attention. According to that survey, the share of men using neurotoxins had risen by nine percentage points since 2012. Filler use among men grew too, climbing from two percent to nine percent over the same stretch.

Those numbers explain the timing. Because more men now ask about cosmetic treatments, the journal set aside a full issue for research and expert comment on how these procedures apply to them. As a result, surgeons who treat male patients can find studies on hair, skin, the face and the body in one place.

The issue mixes original articles with commentary, so readers get both new findings and expert opinion on the same subjects. That mix makes the November issue a handy reference for any practice that sees a growing number of male patients.
