LOS ANGELES, Nov. 9, 2017 — WeLens, a tech startup that has created software to bring together groups, both small and large alike, into completely synchronized Virtual Reality (VR) experiences, has set a new world record for the largest group in a wirelessly synchronized VR viewing in one location. A screening of VR film “Under the Canopy,” an immersive video experience directed by filmmaker Patrick Meegan, showed for a record-breaking audience of 425 viewers at Conservation International's 30th Anniversary fundraiser on November 2 at 3Labs in Culver City.

The foundation honored its executive vice chair, Harrison Ford, and drew in other celebrity guests including Calista Flockhart, Sophia Bush and Arielle Kebbel, as well as a performance by Vanessa Carlton. After an introduction to the evening, Conservation International CEO M. Sanjayan surprised the audience with wireless VR headsets and invited them to participate in the record-setting group VR screening of “Under the Canopy.”

“WeLens has developed this new wireless technology to sync audiences together in VR and our LensPass remote control software brings the experience to a whole new level,” said James Levy, WeLens's founder and CEO. “With LensPass, you can monitor how many devices are connected as well as tract their status and health stats like battery and temperature, not just for one or two devices but several hundreds.”

Previous large-scale group VR screenings have been done but participants' headsets were tethered with a cable providing data connections, such as the keynote by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at the Oculus Connect conference in 2015.

The 'No Forests, No Future' theme at the event showcased the Amazon rainforest and its role in reducing climate change. The fundraiser was part of a six-year reforestation effort that seeks to restore 73 million trees in the Brazilian Amazon by 2023.

About WeLens: Founded in 2016, WeLens has been committed to offering efficient solutions for facilitating VR screenings. Levy, an alumnus of the Y-Combinator startup program, founded WeLens with the goal of making immersive computing technologies like VR less solitary and more communal. The company launched with a VR Kit service, designed to make the VR experience simple by providing the gear needed for a VR activation and producing the screening content preloaded, tested and delivered at the time and place of a customer's choosing. Filmmakers, brands, and agencies can now easily incorporate wireless VR into screenings and events to enhance their experience and creativity.
