Dr. Summergrad is the Dr. Frances S. Arkin professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry as well as a professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and is psychiatrist-in-chief at Tufts Medical Center since 2004, Dr. Summergrad is also the founding chairman, former interim president, president and chief executive officer of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization. An international leader in medical psychiatric illness and care, Dr. Summergrad served as the 141st President of the American Psychiatric Association from 2014-15 and is also a past president of the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry and past chair of the American Hospital Association Governing Council for Psychiatry and Substance Use. His academic focus has included mood disorders, medical-psychiatric illness, and health system design. Board certified in both psychiatry and internal medicine, he is also a well-known speaker in the field and author of more than 100 peer reviewed publications and chapters to books.
Having previously taught as an instructor, assistant and associate professor, and lecturer of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School from 1985 to 2014, Dr. Summergrad began his career in 1978 after completing a BA and MD at State University of New York and training in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and Boston University School of Medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Summergrad gained experience in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School as chief resident and clinical fellow in psychiatry and was Chief of Inpatient Psychiatric Services at Massachusetts General Hospital prior to his recruitment to Tufts.
Currently serving on the editorial board for several professional journals, Dr. Summergrad is active in numerous capacities with many professional organizations in addition to those noted above. He is a member of the board of trustees for Tufts Medical Center and Wellforce, a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, the American College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh.
The recipient of numerous awards that date back to 1975, including a David K. Miller Prize in Medicine by SUNY, being named to Castle and Connolly's America's Top Doctors since 2011, and receiving a Distinguished Faculty Award by Tufts University School of Medicine in 2015, Dr. Summergrad has also been included in Who's Who in the East.
