Holiday Cheers Can Lead to Tears When Someone Drives Impaired — Plan Ahead For a Sober Ride Home

OAKVILLE, ON–(Marketwired – December 21, 2017) – Those glasses of holiday cheer can lead to tears when someone gets behind the wheel impaired. MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are asking everyone to help prevent impaired driving this holiday season by planning ahead for a sober ride home.

“Driving impaired is never worth the risk to yourself, to your passengers or to the other motorists on the road with you,” said MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates. “Let's give one another the gift of safety this holiday season by making the commitment to never drive impaired. Planning ahead for a sober ride home only takes a few moments, and it can prevent a lifetime of grief and pain.”

Every year, hundreds of Canadians are killed and tens of thousands are injured in crashes involving alcohol and/or drugs. Everyone can play a role in preventing these tragedies.

  • Plan ahead if you're going to be drinking or consuming drugs — call an Uber, take a cab, take a bus, arrange a designated driver or plan to stay over; never drive impaired.
  • Never accept a ride from a driver who may be impaired.
  • Call 911 if you see a driver you suspect is impaired.

All across the country, MADD Canada Chapters and Community Leaders are sharing the sober driving message and honouring victims of impaired driving through the Project Red Ribbon campaign. Now in its 30th year, Project Red Ribbon promotes safe and sober driving throughout the holiday season. Dedicated partner Allstate Insurance Company of Canada has sponsored the campaign every year since its inception. “Every holiday season for the last 30 years, Allstate Canada and our dedicated agents across the country have joined with MADD Canada to help raise awareness and spread the sober driving message,” said Ryan Michel, President and CEO of Allstate Canada. “No one should have to face the devastation that comes as a result of an impaired driving crash. Keep you and your loved ones safe this season by planning ahead and making the choice to not drive impaired.”

However you are celebrating this holiday season, make a sober ride home your priority. Call an Uber or a cab, arrange a designated driver, take public transit or stay the night. Revelers looking for a safe, sober and reliable ride home at the push of a button can check out Uber, MADD Canada's Official Designated Driving App. Visit https://www.uber.com/partner/en-ca/madd-canada/ for more information.
