Animal feed segment has the highest market share

One of the key ingredients in the animal feed industry is sodium bicarbonate. It was initially used as a cow supplement. Natural feed-grade sodium bicarbonate reduces the acidic conditions while stabilizing the rumen pH and provides excellent buffering qualities. Sodium bicarbonate is used as an effective buffering agent that maintains the pH between 5.5 and 6.8.

According to Mohd Shakeel Iqbal, a lead analyst at Technavio for metals and minerals research, “To make the egg shells stronger, sodium bicarbonate is used as a replacement for salt in poultry feed. Sodium bicarbonate also provides as a source of sodium, which helps provide drier litter and promotes a healthy living environment.”

Food and beverage – market size and forecast

The global sodium bicarbonate market in the food and beverage segment was valued at USD 366.84 million in 2016 and is expected to reach USD 369 million by 2021. Sodium bicarbonate is primarily used in baking soda. Its ability to react with acidic compounds in batters and dough gives rise to the characteristic texture and grain in cakes and bread. The release of CO2 helps expand the batter and dough and makes it fluffy. In the food and beverage industry, sodium bicarbonate is used in the following applications: baking goods, legumes and beans, food coloring, effervescent soda, and vegetable and fruit scrub.

FGT – market size and forecast

Flue gas is an outcome of waste pollutants that are generated in industrial processes. Pollutants such as hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids have to be treated before they can be released into the environment. Sodium bicarbonate is used to treat such pollutants due to its high reactivity and the ability to absorb the flue gas in a short period of time.

“Sodium bicarbonate is a relatively new development in the FGT as earlier lime hydrate was used for FGT. Sodium bicarbonate in the form of baking soda is used for FGT as it acts as an alkaline reagent. This helps destroy solid waste, refuse-derived fuel, waste wood, and sewage sludge,” says Shakeel.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s market research analysts in this report are:
