HOUSTON, Nov. 13, 2017 — Cornerstone Home Lending, Inc. is the #2 Top Workplace among Large Companies in the Houston Chronicle's 2017 Top Workplaces edition. Marc N. Laird, Cornerstone's Co-Founder and CEO, has also been recognized for leadership excellence. This is the eighth consecutive year that Cornerstone has been included as a Top Workplace since the Houston Chronicle debuted the rankings in 2010.

The 2017 Top Workplaces list recognizes Houston's leading 150 employers, from small companies with 50 employees to large companies with more than 500 people. Evaluations are based on survey responses from more than 84,000 area employees. In partnership with the Houston Chronicle, Energage, a Philadelphia-based research and consulting firm that recently changed its name from WorkplaceDynamics, invited local companies to participate in the survey and then tallied the responses. Respondents rated their companies on qualities such as potential for advancement, work schedule flexibility, pay and benefits, and leadership.

“At Cornerstone, we don't have employees—we have team members,” says Laird. “Our entire team is aligned toward one vision: To be the country's best home lender. And that inspires us every day to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”

Willie French, Cornerstone's Senior Vice President of Human Resources, credits a work-family focus for helping the Houston-based company grow into one of the largest mortgage lenders in the country. “Creating a happy, supportive workplace is one of our core convictions,” says French. “We truly value all 1,800 team members across the country, and we do everything we can to make sure they know it.”

Cornerstone's many ways of supporting and recognizing team members include personalized birthday greetings from Laird, anniversary presents for long-time service, monthly fun day gift card drawings, and appreciation events with catered lunches and health and wellness amenities. The company also manages the Cornerstone Cares program, which is funded by team member donations and offers financial aid to co-workers or immediate families experiencing crisis or hardship.

Brad grew up in a small town in northern Iowa. He studied chemistry in college, graduated, and married his wife one month later. They were then blessed with two baby boys within the first four years of marriage. Having babies gave their family a desire to return to the old paths – to nourish their family with traditional, homegrown foods; rid their home of toxic chemicals and petroleum products; and give their boys a chance to know a simple, sustainable way of life. They are currently building a homestead from scratch on two little acres in central Texas. There’s a lot to be done to become somewhat self-sufficient, but they are debt-free and get to spend their days living this simple, good life together with their five young children.
