10-year-old “drag kid Desmond is Amazing will participate in Camp Lightbulb’s first-ever Spring Camp for LGBTQ teens Saturday, March 31 in New York City. Known for his gender fluid fashion sense and advocacy work supporting LGBTQ youth, “Desmond hopes to encourage the campers to express themselves, love themselves, and accept themselves, said his mother and manager Wendy Nopales. “His message is ‘Be yourself, always’.

Camp Lightbulb’s Spring Camp will explore gender identity via this itinerary: a discussion of gender identity, a screening of seminal drag documentary Paris Is Burning, a kid-friendly vogue ball (with voguing workshop), attending the city’s world famous Easter Parade along Fifth Avenue (bonnet-making workshop prior) and a matinee performance of Broadway smash Kinky Boots. A cast meet-and-greet backstage is in the works.

The 2-day, overnight camp begins the morning of Saturday, March 31, continuing into the evening of Sunday, April 1. The $450 cost to attend includes meals, accommodation and activities, but excludes transportation and pocket money. Financial aid is always available. Licensed counselors will be onsite with accommodations at a facility with 24-hour round-the-clock security.

To register their child, parents of LGBTQ teens aged 14-18 can visit camplightbulb.org/register/. With only a few spots left, registration deadline has been extended to March 15.

Founded in 2011, Camp Lightbulb provides LGBTQ youth, ages 14 to 18, with magical overnight camp experiences creating lifelong memories. With a Summer Camp in Provincetown, MA, a Winter Camp in Los Angeles and a new Spring Camp in New York City, campers attend from across the U.S. and identify along the entire LGBTQ spectrum.
